Cross-Border Information Exchange

Handling matters such as death and inheritance across countries is often complex and stressful. The Nordic DigiGov Lab is therefore developing a proof of concept for automated information exchange in the life event death and inheritance. We aim to demonstrate not only the technical feasibility, but also the societal value of cross-border digital services.

Simplifying Life Events Across Borders

The Nordic DigiGov Lab is developing a prototype for automated cross-border information exchange, starting with the life event death and inheritance. Today, citizens and families face long, fragmented processes when a person passes away in another country. Our goal is to make these procedures seamless, secure, and user-friendly – ensuring that rights and obligations are recognised across the Nordic-Baltic region.

Why It Matters

Inheritance and other post-death processes involve multiple authorities across borders. Current manual handling is time-consuming, inconsistent, and stressful for citizens. With automated exchange, families can focus on grieving – not bureaucracy.

What We Aim to Deliver by 2025

  • A tested prototype for automated data exchange between at least two Nordic countries.
  • A cost-benefit analysis proving the efficiency and value of cross-border exchange.
  • User Story & Business Case: Establish practical user scenarios that demonstrate the benefits of cross-border digital services.

Key Objectives

  • Prototype Development: Test a solution for the automated exchange of information between authorities in different countries.
  • Secure and Trusted Exchange: Ensure that information flows between countries in a way that is robust.
